“Are all these people out for the cats and dogs?” asked Nan Kempner, looking around the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria at Tuesday night’s “Top Dog” gala in New York.
Indeed, the evening — a benefit for the Animal Medical Center — drew a large mix of the city’s notable social figures, ranging from Annette de la Renta to Rachel Peters. And to mark the beginning of the social season, members of the junior set arrived in their runway picks for fall.
“Where are all the husbands?” cried Sloan Lindemann, watching the beautifully decked-out girls chatting in a hub early in the cocktail hour. One subject of discussion was Lourdes Fanjul, who is expecting a baby in February.
“Aren’t they cute, all four of them?” said Alexi Zoullas, pointing to Lourdes and the also pregnant Valesca Guerrand-Hermes.
Meanwhile, Samantha Boardman was glowing for another reason.
“I’m really happy for my mom,” she said, referring to Pauline Boardman and her role as the evening’s co-chair with Emilia Fanjul. “She hasn’t done anything in New York for a while.” Mom begged to differ.
“My toes are in New York, even though I spend a lot of time in Connecticut and Palm Beach,” she said later, standing next to her companion, Bill Pitt. This was Boardman’s third and perhaps last time hosting the event, which takes place every two years.
“The juniors are getting up there,” she said. “I hope maybe Sloan Lindemann and Aerin Lauder will want to do it — and, of course, Samantha and Serena Boardman. Who knows…the jury is still out.”
