FCBID NAMES NOMINEES FOR 8 PLAQUES TO BE SET IN THE FASHION WALK OF FAME
NEW YORK — The Fashion Center Business Improvement District confirmed its plans on Thursday to install a Fashion Walk of Fame on Seventh Avenue and also named 46 nominees, among which eight will be selected as recipients of the first decorative sidewalk plaques.
White bronze and granite markers honoring the designers and featuring their signature, a brief description of their contribution to fashion and a sketch, will be embedded in the sidewalks along Seventh Avenue, a la Mann’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles in the spring, said Barbara Randall, executive director of the FCBID.
Eight plaques will be installed this year, with additional designers inducted each year thereafter. As reported, the FCBID originally planned to honor three living designers among the eight recipients, although it could not be confirmed at press time whether that is still the case.
A selection committee of editors, retailers and museum curators was formed to establish criteria for eligibility and to nominate designers for induction.
The committee is chaired by Valerie Steele, chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. The FCBID will announce the winners of the inductees in October, Randall said.
The nominees for the honor include Bill Blass, Bonnie Cashin, Liz Claiborne, Oscar de la Renta, Perry Ellis, Halston, Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, Anne Klein, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Bob Mackie, Claire McCardell, Norman Norell, Clare Potter, Adele Simpson, Anna Sui and Diane Von Furstenberg.
