SARA LEE PLANS CLOSING OF SOUTH CAROLINA PLANT
NEW YORK — Continued sagging sales of sheers has prompted Sara Lee Corp., the maker of Hanes, L’eggs and licensed Donna Karan hosiery, to close its Florence, S.C., plant by the end of this year.
Of the 400 people employed at the plant, 125 will relocate to a finishing and distribution center in Rockingham, N.C., a company spokesman said. The company makes primarily L’eggs products at the Florence site, according to a Sara Lee spokesman.
The closing is unrelated to the company’s plans to sell manufacturing plants and focus on sales and marketing, he said.
Referring to the continued lackluster sales of sheers and the acceptance of casual dress codes in the work force, the spokesman said, “This is a continued industry trend. It’s not anything that happened recently.”
Once the Florence site closes, Sara Lee will maintain eight other production facilities.
