LABOR DEPARTMENT FINES KMART FOR VIOLATIONS
WASHINGTON — The Labor Department has fined Kmart Corp. $33,600 for allowing workers under 18 to operate paper balers, and in one case, a fork lift, in violation of federal workplace safety laws governing children.
The paper baler violations involved 14 workers, 16 to 17 years old, working in stores in Columbia, Pa.; Sanford, N.C., and Owensboro, Ky. In one case in the Pennsylvania store, one of the workers received a minor injury to his hand while loading a baler. The fork lift violation occurred in the North Carolina store.
Kmart officials couldn’t be reached for comment. However, Labor officials said Kmart would require store managers at its 2,100 locations to receive video training on the safe employment of young workers. The managers also will review corporate safety manuals and post warning signs on heavy equipment.
