RETAIL ISSUES JOIN DOW GAIN

NEW YORK — The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Friday gained 167.15 points to 9037.71, and many retailers joined the rally.
Among the gainers were Gap Inc., up 2 7/8 to 59 1/8; TJX Cos., 2 7/8 to 51 3/4; Nordstrom, 2 3/16 to 75 1/8; Neiman Marcus Group, 1 13/16 to 37; Dayton Hudson, 2 3/8 to 51 1/16; J.C. Penney Co., 1 3/4 to 75 1/4; Limited 1 15/16 to 32 15/16; Talbots, 1 1/4 to 30 1/4; Wal-Mart, 1 3/16 to 57 13/16, and May Department Stores, 1 9/16 to 65 1/8.
Most retailers on Thursday reported solid sales gains for May.
Manufacturers went against the grain, though.
Tommy Hilfiger Corp. lost 4 1/16 to 64 1/4 due to investor concerns over soft sales in its core men’s business.
Falling in sympathy were two of Hilfiger’s competitors, Nautica Enterprises, down 1/2 to 27 1/4, and Polo Ralph Lauren, 3/16 to 28 5/16.
Other decliners were Authentic Fitness, 2 1/8 to 15 15/16, Warnaco Group, 15/16 to 41 5/8; and The North Face, 1/4 to 25.
Donna Karan International, though, added 1 1/8 to 15 3/8.
Estee Lauder tacked on 1 to finish the week’s trading at 62 7/8.
