BERLIN — German trade show producer Igedo Co. is expanding its presence in China.
The Dusseldorf-based company announced it will produce a new apparel trade show, Fashion China, to premiere in Shanghai March 24-26, 1999.
Fashion China is a joint venture between Igedo and the Chinese organizations CCPIT Tex, CTIEC Beijing and Shanghai Textile Holdings, which also co-produce with the Igedo Dessous China lingerie and swimwear show.
Dessous China made its debut in 1996 and, according to the organizers, has become Asia’s largest trade fair for body/beachwear and preliminary supplies.
Fashion China will feature European and American women’s and men’s career and casualwear, as well as a pavilion for children’s apparel.
The show will be held on approximately 65,000 square feet of exhibition space at Intex Shanghai.
Igedo chief executive Manfred Kronen said participation for the first fair will be limited to 100 firms, “but I think there’ll be more interest,” he commented.
The German fair organizer and its Chinese partners have been considering launching an apparel trade show in China for some time and feel “the market is ready now.”
“We’ve been looking at price points in the stores to see how much European merchandise can be sold, and it seems to be a good time [to start],” Kronen said.
Income and consumption in China have doubled in the last four years, with apparel sales in Shanghai increasing 40 percent since 1992, according to a statement from Igedo.
In addition to the CPD and Igedo Dessous fairs in Dusseldorf, Igedo also produces Europe Selection Hong Kong, Avenida Moda in Miami and Pure Womenswear in London with various joint-venture partners.
