APPAREL MAKERS CAUGHT AS DOW TUMBLES AGAIN

NEW YORK — Wall Street continued to be nervous Wednesday as the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 94 points to close at 6,517, and some fashion issues took a beating as well.
Apparel manufacturers were hard hit, with decliners including Gucci Group, off 3/4 to 72; Fruit of the Loom, 1 3/8 to 39 1/2; Tommy Hilfiger Corp., 1 1/2 to 49 7/8; Liz Claiborne, 3/4 to 43 1/4; and Warnaco Group, 3/4 to 30.
Others losing ground were VF Corp., down 1 to 65 5/8; Russell Corp., 5/8 to 34 3/4; Mossimo, 1/4 to 7 3/4; and Guess, 1/4 to 10 3/8.
There were gainers among manufacturers, though, including Donna Karan International, up 1/4 to 9 3/8; Designer Holdings, 1/8 to 7 7/8; Jones Apparel, 5/8 to 38 1/8; Kellwood Co., 3/8 to 25 7/8; and St. John Knits, 1/4 to 43 7/8.
Most retailers slipped marginally, if at all. Gainers included Saks, 1 7/8 to 32 14/; Value City, 1/2 to 8 7/8 and Sears, 5/8 to 49 3/8.
