SI’S COVER LIGHTS UP BIKINI LINE AT PISCES
NEW YORK — The phones were ringing Wednesday at Pisces Swimwear, a one-year-old San Diego, Calif.-based swimwear firm, whose polkadot bikini, worn by model Tyra Banks, is on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s new swimsuit issue, which hit the newsstands Wednesday.
The firm so far has fielded at least 100 calls, mostly from women customers, all wanting to know how they could buy the suit, according to Linda Munsch, a receptionist who was holding the fort at Pisces offices, while executives were in Las Vegas at the WWDMagic show. The suit carries a retail price of $82.
The SI issue was devoted to the bikini, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
Meanwhile, Banks, who shared the cover with Valeria Mazza last year, relishes the fame that goes with getting splashed on the cover, but she admitted the other night that she is really after something more tangible.
“It made me a lot of money last year. I got to do all these commercials like with Pepsi and Nike,” said Banks, at a party, held Tuesday night here at Industria SuperStudio, to celebrate the debut of the issue.
