DJIA BOUNCES BACK; FEW RETAILERS FOLLOW
NEW YORK — Stocks made something of a rebound Monday with a 60.21 point gain on the Dow Jones Industrials taking that closely watched index to 6451.90, but retail and apparel stocks ignored the rally and were mostly down fractionally.
The exceptions included Ann Taylor Stores, which tacked on 1 1/4 to 22 3/4; Kohl’s, which ran ahead 2 1/2 to 47 1/4, and J.C. Penney, up 1/2 to 45 7/8.
In the apparel group, Liz Claiborne managed a 1/2 point gain to 45 1/4, while most of the other stocks in the group were off.
Monday’s recovery followed a 148 point drop on Friday that more than wiped out the entire gain in the Dow for l997.
