LANG TO MISS CFDA GALA; BUSINESS CITED
PARIS — One important no-show at Monday night’s CFDA Awards gala was the International Designer of the Year, Helmut Lang.
Reached Monday afternoon in his atelier in Vienna, Lang said last-minute business reasons made it impossible for him to make the trip.
The designer told WWD that Jenny Holzer, who was scheduled to present the award, would “present and accept.”
Lang’s CFDA presentation was also scheduled to include a projection of photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Weber from Lang’s new advertising campaign, a video by “Unzipped” director Douglas Keeve and a hastily arranged telecommunications hookup.
“I’m now doing my thank you speech over the phone,” he said with a laugh Monday afternoon. “That’s the only way it could be done.”
