NEW DESIGNERS
THE BARE MINIMUM

NEW YORK — Minimalism is the key to Kazuyo Nakano’s new handbag line, Carballido.
After learning the rudiments about handbags — from design and fabric selection to construction and manufacturing — in her father’s leather bag factory, Nakano, a native of Kyoto, Japan, honed her skills by studying surface and textile design and fashion construction at the Lei Design School in Japan.
“It has been an ongoing dream for me to start my own line and after working for many designers, I felt that this was the perfect time,” said Nakano, who, in the course of a 20-year career, has designed accessories for Maxx, Donna Karan and Robert Lee Morris.
Nakano said she takes inspiration from movies, dance and music and admires the designs of Prada, Dries Van Noten and Issey Miyake for their minimalist, futuristic vision.
Nakano named the line after her partner, Ignacius Carballido, because it had a global sound to it and she felt this would extend her reach to a more global-minded customer.
“My customer has a modern sense of style, understands fashion, likes to mix and match designers and knows quality products,” said Nakano.
The 12-piece Carballido collection is clean and functional, featuring structured handbags and shoulder bags made from supple Italian leather. Other details are zippered compartments, outer pockets and adjustable handles, with a palette including blood red, camel, chocolate and black. Nakano has also created some black satin purses with flower embroidery that can go from day into evening.
Nakano plans to add belts and small leather goods to the mix and hopes to expand with simple, modern apparel that will complement her accessories. She also plans to open a shop in the next five years to showcase her designs. She estimated sales this year would reach $500,000.
Wholesale prices range from $45 for a small satin purse to $52 for a satin banana-shaped satchel to $105 for a large leather shoulder bag.
The Big Drop boutique here and Joyce in Japan have ordered the line, Nakano said. Carballido is represented by Showroom Seven here.
