THE ATHLETE’S FOOT TO UNVEIL SUPERSTORE IN HERALD SQUARE
NEW YORK — The Athlete’s Foot plans to open its first superstore in July.
It has signed a multi-year lease for a 19,000-square-foot store at 48 West 34th Street here. The company will occupy 14,000 square feet on the second floor of the building as well as 5,000 square feet on the ground floor. The second-floor space was leased by Sam Goody until the end of last year.
Most Athlete’s Foot stores are between 1,500 and 2,500 square feet. Although most of its stores do not offer apparel, the superstore will feature a full range of activewear for women and men.
The Athlete’s Foot will have plenty of competition in the Herald Square area. Foot Locker, VIM and Dr. Jay’s operate stores on the north side of West 34th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
Although the store will be open to the public in July, a grand opening is scheduled for early August, according to Steven Pi, project manager for PEG Park, the White Plains, N.Y., architectural firm renovating the site.
With corporate headquarters in Kennesaw, Ga., Athlete’s Foot operates 269 stores and franchises 168 others in the U.S. There are 200 franchised units in 27 other countries.
Sneaker Stadium also looked at the 34th Street space but is not interested in a second-floor location, according to Greg Williams, vice president of real estate for the Edison, N.J.-based retailer. Sneaker Stadium remains interested in finding a Manhattan site and has not ruled out the Herald Square area, Williams said.
