PENNEY’S SALES OFF 3.7% IN MARCH
PLANO, Tex. — J.C. Penney Co. Inc. said March same-store sales dropped 3.7 percent, while total sales dipped 3 percent to $1.29 billion from $1.32 billion.
The company said sales for the five weeks were hurt by the loss of a day’s sales since stores were closed for Easter. Penney’s said it expects first-quarter same-store sales to increase in the low-to-mid-single digits.
A company spokesman said strong sellers in women’s included dresses, career, sportswear, jewelry and shoes.
For the nine weeks, same-store sales rose 2.2 percent, while total sales rose 3.3 percent to $2.25 billion.
