NEW YORK — Former Balenciaga designer Josephus Melchior Thimister will launch his new line of signature eveningwear here with Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman for fall selling.
Thimister, who is based in Paris, showed a 21-piece collection of all-black evening dresses in his apartment there last month. Barneys bought it for its flagship store here, as well as for its Chicago and Beverly Hills units exclusively. The designer will be in the store June 12 for a personal appearance.
“We’ve supported him throughout the years at Balenciaga,” said Bonnie Pressman, executive vice president and fashion director at Barneys. “It’s great to see him step out on his own. It’s very wearable, very modern and I think it will appeal to a broad customer base.”
Thimister, 34, had been the designer for Balenciaga for five years when he left last month.
Bergdorf Goodman also bought the collection, which wholesales from about $600 to about $1,950. Thimister will be at Bergdorf’s June 24-25 and the store will dedicate its Fifth Avenue windows to him.
“I thought the clothes were extraordinary,” said Joseph Boitano, executive vice president of Bergdorf’s. “It’s modern and clean, and almost couture in its styling. His show was one of my favorite things in Europe.”
