DOW LEAP SKIPS FASHION

NEW YORK — The Dow Jones Industrial Average catapulted 173.38 points to 6,833.59 Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, but only a few fashion issues showed noteworthy gains.
The Dow’s thrust — the second-biggest point gain in history — was apparently driven by a reduction in long-term interest rates.
The limited number of gainers among fashion stocks included Dayton Hudson Corp., up 3/4 to 41 3/4; Gap Inc., 5/8 to 32 1/2; Estee Lauder Cos., 1 5/8 to 42 5/8; Sears, Roebuck & Co., 7/8 to 48 1/8; Abercrombie & Fitch, 7/8 to 14, and VF Corp., 3/4 to 68 3/8.
Stocks losing ground included Russell Corp., down 1 3/8 to 26; St. John Knits, off 1 5/8 to 39 1/8; Talbots Inc., 3/4 to 26; Mossimo Inc., 5/8 to 6 5/8; Kellwood Co., 5/8 to 24, and Revlon Inc., 5/8 to 34 3/8.
