NEW YORK — Mary Jane Marcasiano has been named director of design at the women’s sweater division of Hampshire Designers Inc., a new post.
Marcasiano, founder and president of her own designer sportswear company, will direct the design of Designers Original, Designers Original Studio and Moving Bleu divisions — three moderate-price branded collections with department store distribution.
Hampshire Designers is a part of Hampshire Group Ltd., which acquired Marcasiano’s business in 1995. Since then, the company has established a presence in both the designer and contemporary markets.
Under Hampshire, Marcasiano has expanded the Mary Jane Marcasiano Signature Collection of designer sportswear, selling to such stores as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. For spring 1998, Marcasiano will introduce a swimwear line exclusively for Neiman’s.
Another major focus of growth has been the Mary Jane Marcasiano Studio label, a contemporary line sold to such stores as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.
Marcasiano will continue to split her time between her SoHo design studio and Hampshire’s showroom at 119 West 40th Street here.
In other news at Hampshire, the company said it has signed letters of intent to obtain licenses to produce and sell men’s sweaters under the Jantzen and Geoffrey Beene labels. The prior licensee of those two labels was Phillips-Van Heusen.
