LOS ANGELES — California’s swimwear designers have set out to make the upcoming season sleek and sophisticated. When swimwear hit the spotlight during the California Collections Preview show here, it was clear that the kitschy retro prints that once took the runways by storm have subsided into muted paisleys and geometric motifs. Buckled looks have taken on more delicate hardware, while new detailing includes embroidery and creative cutouts. And the beach will certainly be more bare if West Coast designers have it their way. But there’ll be a touch of modesty, too. With hardly a tank suit in sight, two-pieces were everywhere for spring and have branched out from the bikini into more reserved tube tops, bandeaus and camisole tops.
