RETAIL STOCKS ENJOY A PIECE OF THE RALLY ON THE BIG BOARD

NEW YORK — The stock market roared ahead 174.78 points on the Dow Jones Industrials Tuesday, with most retail issues and some apparel stocks joining the party.
The biggest point gainer among the retailers was Nordstrom, which jumped 3 3/8 to 67 1/2, a 12-month high. Other point-plus gainers in the retailer group were TJX Cos., 2 to 31 7/8; Mercantile Stores, 2 to 65 1/4; Gap, 1 1/2 to 53 1/8; J.C. Penney, 1 1/4 to 62 1/4, and Dillard’s, 1 1/8 to 44 1/16. Other retail gainers include Federated Department Stores, up 15/16 to 44 1/4; Dress Barn, 15/16 to 26, and Talbots, 7/8 to 30 3/4.
In the apparel segment, Gucci Group, which has been drifting down in recent weeks, rebounded Tuesday with a 4 1/4-point jump to 57 1/2. Liz Claiborne added 1 3/4 to 52 15/16, Mossimo was up 1 3/4 to 11 3/8 and VF Corp. was ahead 1 1/16 to 93 5/16. Polo Ralph Lauren edged up 5/16 to 25 1/2, and Donna Karan International added 1/16 to 12 15/16.
