A WHO’S OF COSMETICS — 1997
THE BEAUTY TOP 75

PARIS — The Top 75 presents the world’s largest cosmetics companies, ranked according to total beauty sales. A Who’s Who of the cosmetics industry, these 75 firms weigh in at just over $76 billion in wholesale volume.
The U.S. has the most companies on the list with 28, while France is second with 11; Germany, Japan and Italy count seven each; the U.K. has five; South Korea four; Brazil three; Spain two, and Sweden one. The U.S. is also the leader in volume terms — $29 billion, over a third of the worldwide total.
Sales figures were obtained directly from the companies or are estimates calculated with the help of industry analysts and government records. Sales are for the 1996 calendar or fiscal year and do not include acquisitions or mergers that have taken place this year. Beauty volume is made up of fragrances, makeup, skin care, sun creams, hair care products, cellulite creams, deodorant and shaving cream. It does not include bar soap, razors, toothpaste, foods and diet supplements, medicine, vitamins or detergents.
To be included in the ranking, a company must sell its products in at least two of three major markets: Europe, North America and Asia.
