SAME-STORE SALES UP 4.3% AT WAL-MART

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Tuesday that same-store sales in September in its discount division were ahead 5.1 percent but overall comps were up 4.3 percent.
The company said that sales were at the low end of its expectations, The month started strong, but slowed at the end of the period.
Strong sellers in the discount division included women’s plus-size apparel, girls’ apparel, sleepwear and health and beauty aids, the firm said.
Wal-Mart also noted that it had an “excellent performance” during the back-to-school period, and its inventories are in-line with plans.
Dragging down the company’s same-store sales, Sam’s Club comps were ahead only 1.3 percent. At Sam’s, strong performers included men’s and women’s apparel, jewelry and health and beauty aids.
Total sales rose 11.8 percent to $10.7 billion from $9.6 billion.
For the year-to-date, Wal-Mart discount stores reported a 6.8 percent same-store sales gain, with a 3.2 percent comp gain at Sam’s. Overall, same-store sales were ahead 5.9 percent for the first eight months of the year.
