HARP TO IT
Byline: Caroline Berkman
The Sports Club/LA takes yoga to another level with its new class, “New Age Stretch with Harp.” Amid the busy metropolis of treadmills and stationary bikes, the soothing sounds of harpist Carol Mukhalian emerge, followed by the encouraging voice of instructor Ron Jason. Mukhalian, who was a principal soloist with the Seattle Symphony for many years, composes music specifically for the class.
Jason coordinates stretch movements to flow with her music. The harp, traditionally recognized as a healing instrument, brings a peaceful melody to the room.
Having toured with Madonna and danced on Broadway, Jason combines his 13 years of dance experience with yoga visual imagery and breathing techniques to instruct an intense, yet invigorating, class. The class has been so successful that Mukhalian and Jason have received offers to teach it around the country.
“The class is something different and universal that people can enjoy,”said Jason. “If my students feel good in the process of doing this, then I’ve accomplished something.”
Mukhalian was a student of Jason’s when they came up with the idea for the class six months ago.
The class lasts one hour and stretches all of the major muscle groups, releasing tension and resulting in an overall feeling of relaxation. The class often attracts up to 70 people. Jason teaches “New Age Stretch with Harp” on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., exclusively at The Sports Club/LA.
