SOME INDUSTRY ISSUES JOIN DJIA RALLY

NEW YORK — The Dow Jones Industrial Average shot up 257.36 points Tuesday, the single biggest point advance in the market measure’s history. Some fashion issues, led by retailers, rallied as well.
The advance, a 3.4 percent gain, pushed the DJIA to 7879.78.Its high of 8259.37 was reached on Aug. 6.
Retail gainers included Gap Inc., rising 2 3/16 to 46 5/8; Gadzooks, 1 1/16 to 48 9/16; Abercrombie & Fitch, 1 to 25; Dayton Hudson, 2 3/16 to 59 3/16; Federated Department Stores, 1 3/16 to 43 3/16; The Limited Inc., 1 to 23 3/4; Mercantile, 1 15/16 to 64 3/8; Wal-Mart Stores, 2 to 37 1/2; Nordstrom, 1 1/2 to 60; May Department Stores, 1 1/8 to 54 15/16, and J.C. Penney, 1 to 61.
Among makers, Estee Lauder Cos. tacked on 1 1/16 to 48 9/16; Revlon gained 1 1/8 to 49 3/4; VF Corp. climbed 2 to 90 3/8; St. John Knits increased 11/16 to 42 13/16, and Kellwood Corp. added 3/4 to 36 7/8.
Shares of Donna Karan nudged up 1/8 to 13 1/4, while Polo Ralph Lauren was flat at 26 1/4.
