NEW YORK — Federated Department Stores is teaming up with Perry Ellis International to develop an exclusive line of Perry Ellis women’s clothing just for Federated divisions, sources said this week.
The move represents a new twist on Federated’s private label strategy. Typically, Federated creates collections under labels it owns, such as Charter Club and INC. These labels are sold at all Federated divisions, except Bloomingdale’s, which creates its own stable of private collections under such labels as Only At and Metropolitan View. However, Bloomingdale’s also is expected to carry the Perry Ellis line.
One source said the line will be at bridge price points.
Federated is said to be already staffing up for the project, having appointed a designer and a merchandise manager.
Ellin Saltzman, who was fashion director at Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Limited Inc. and Bergdorf Goodman during her career, is temporarily assisting Perry Ellis International, which owns the Perry Ellis trademark, on the Federated project. Her assignment is for about three weeks.
Perry Ellis officials had no comment. Federated officials and Saltzman could not be reached.
