SHAPIRO JOINS GREAT AMERICAN: Jill Shapiro has joined Great American Knitting Mills as national sales manager, a new post.
She is based at the company’s New York offices and reports to Dean Norman, president of licensed and branded hosiery.
Most recently, Shapiro was vice president of sales for Royce Hosiery.
Shapiro is responsible for developing new business for Jockey women’s and men’s socks and Nautica socks as well as the company’s private label program.
Don Grasso continues as national sales manager for Nautica hosiery.

E&E INKS DEAL: E&E Hosiery has signed a deal to produce women’s and children’s socks under the licensed label Tamigochi, the toy virtual pet. The women’s line, which will be unveiled during November market, should generate $250,000 in annual wholesale volume, said Steve Weiser, sales and marketing director.
In other company news, John Kane has joined the company as vice president of sales and merchandising, a new post. He was an account executive at Carolina Hosiery Mills. Also, Angel Cuthbert has been named production coordinator, another new post. Most recently, she was assistant production manager for socks at Liz Claiborne.
Cuthbert and Kane are based at the company’s New York showroom and report to Eli Levy, president.

AMERICAN ESSENTIALS EXPANDS: To increase its production 25 percent, American Essentials, the maker of licensed Calvin Klein and Guess socks as well as its own label, has bought a 93,500-square-foot plant in Toronto.
Having signed a deal in June with Guess to produce and distribute socks for women and men, American Essentials needed to increase production, said Jordan Lipson, president and chief executive officer of American Essentials.
He declined to say how much the company invested in the site.
Following renovations, the facility is scheduled to open in May.
The plant will employ 125 people in 1998 and 250 employees by the end of 1999. The plant management will report to Earl Lipson, president of operations for McGregor Industries, American Essentials’ parent company.
In addition to the new facility, American Essentials owns two plants in Toronto and another in Hickory, N.C. The company currently has 700 employees.
