UNITE’S NEW VP: Katie Quan has been elected a vice president of UNITE, the textile and apparel workers’ union. She is the first Asian-American to be elected a vice president of UNITE or its predecessor unions, the ILGWU and ACTWU.
Quan is manager of UNITE’s Pacific Northwest District Council and is a member of the executive committee of the San Francisco Labor Council.
Quan joined the ILGWU in 1975 and became a member of the union’s staff in 1984. She is a founding member of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance and was instrumental in creating the Garment Industry Day Care Center of Chinatown, a center jointly run and supported by the union and the San Francisco garment industry.
FINLEY FETE: Ruth Finley, publisher and owner of Fashion Calendar International and executive director of the New York Fashion Council, will be the guest of honor at the High School of Fashion Industries’ 12th annual dinner-dance.
It is put on by the Fashion Crafts Educational Commission, the advisory board for the school, and features a fashion show of student designs. The event will take place Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton New York Hotel, 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue, New York. The dinner-dance benefits the school’s scholarship fund.
