WEEKLY STOCK INDEX
NEW YORK — The WWD Stock Index, which sharply underperformed the broader market in 1995, jumped 4.1 percent in the week ended Jan. 5, far outdistancing the 1.3 percent gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
The gains came despite the report of weak December sales by major retailers. Sears, Roebuck, up 3 to 42, and The Gap, rising 5 1/8 to 47 1/8, both benefited from robust sales gains.
