VERSACE SUES OVER MEDUSA TRADEMARK
NEW YORK — Gianni Versace SpA has filed suit against Sasha Handbags Inc., Butler Group Inc., Gantos Inc. and Nouri Ltd., accusing the companies of knocking off its Medusa trademark.
In the suit, filed in U.S. District Court here, Versace said the companies have been making and selling handbags, belts and other accessories featuring medallions that “are virtually identical to Versace’s Medusa trademarks.”
The fashion house added that the infringement was “undertaken to trade on the reputation and good will of Versace and to dilute the famous Medusa trademarks.”
Versace, which has used its Medusa marks since 1989, said it sent letters to the defendants asking them to stop selling the allegedly infringing merchandise, but the companies refused to do so and did not return calls seeking comment. The suit also seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. — Fairchild News Service
