CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Sunglass Hut International will consolidate its catalog and distribution operations and move them to Atlanta in April.
The sunglasses specialty retailer has a distribution center in Medley, Fla., that employs about 70 people, one in Indianapolis with fewer than 12 workers and a direct-mail catalog facility in Boulder, Colo., with 11 people. Sunglass Hut said it expects to relocate some associates to Atlanta.
“The new 60,000-square-foot facility in Atlanta will enable us to enhance the efficiency of our distribution functions as well as accommodate the rapid growth of our company,” said Jack B. Chadsey, president and chief executive officer, in a statement. “The Atlanta area offers us excellent logistical opportunities to coordinate the shipping of our products to our North American locations.”
Workers not moved to Atlanta will be offered a severance package. Sunglass Hut is working with employment services to provide training to laid-off workers and is contacting local employers to try to place them.
“The company will also give priority employment consideration to any associates who may wish to relocate to the Atlanta area,” Chadsey added.
In developments on the retail side, Sunglass Hut has signed a letter of intent with Royal Sporting House Pte. Ltd. of Singapore, a retail firm with 165 stores, to form a joint venture for opening Sunglass Huts in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Sunglass Hut operates approximately 1,700 stores in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and Australia. — Fairchild News Service
