RETAIL, APPAREL DIDN’T JUMP WITH THE DJIA
NEW YORK — The stock market was up sharply Thursday, but with little help from retail or apparel. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 57.45 points to 5,124.35 with a big boost from IBM, up 8 3/8 to 96. Three retailers hit the New York Stock Exchange’s most-active list and were at or near 52-week lows. Wal-Mart Stores headed the actives, off 1 1/8 to a new low of 19 1/4. Turnover was 14.2 million shares. Kmart dropped 1/4 to 6 1/8, on a volume of 3.4 million shares. Woolworth fell 3/8 to a new 12-month low of 9 3/4, on turnover of 3.3 million shares.
