CHAMPAGNE TASTES: Where can I get a glass of sham-pain-e?” Jerry Hall asked, after an avalanche of paparazzi greeted her and Thierry Mugler at the opening of the designer’s new Rue du Bac boutique on Monday. It’s Mugler’s third and biggest store in Paris. Liza Minnelli also came to the party, but she didn’t manage to make it to Christian Dior the next day, even though the house saved a front-row seat for her. She would have been right next to Charlotte Rampling, who was the star of the show, looking unbelievably chic in a black pinstripe Yohji Yamamoto pantsuit with an untucked long white blouse.
FAB HOTEL: There’s a new hotel hot spot in Paris that some are calling a younger, hipper Ritz. The Hotel Costes, right around the corner from the Place VendOme, is suddenly becoming a scene. Guests at the newly renovated hotel have ranged from Naomi Campbell to Iggy Pop, and all kinds of editors and stylists can be found lounging around its Napoleon III lobby. Even though the hotel doesn’t have a proper restaurant, the owner, Jean-Louis Costes, provides drinks and light meals “anywhere at anytime.” Next season, the fashion flock will even be able to strip down to their milky white skins and jump into the hotel’s underground pool. And that too will be a moveable feast, since Costes plans to serve drinks there as well.
Speedos, of course, aren’t required dressing at the Ritz Bar. White Chanel suits are, however — particularly if you’re Russian. Over lunch on Tuesday, not one, not two, but three women had the same suit along with the absolutely necessary Kelly bag.
