JOAN AND DAVID IN NEW JAPAN VENTURE
NEW YORK — Joan and David has signed an agreement with Mitsui-Misaki in Japan to distribute its ready-to-wear and accessories line there for the first time.
Mitsui Corp., a trading company based in Tokyo, acts as an agent for Misaki Shoji Co. Ltd., in Osaka. Joan and David has had a six-year relationship with Mitsui-Misaki for footwear only.
Currently, Joan and David footwear boutiques exist in Tokyo and Osaka and in shop-in-shops at companies such as Seibu and Takashimaya.
The new agreement entails opening full-collection boutiques in which selections from the full range of Joan Helpern-designed products will be available. These products will include rtw and knitwear, as well as accessories.
The initial focus will be on freestanding stores, followed by complete shop-in-shops within department stores.
The first full collection boutique will open at the end of March at a freestanding store at the Imperial Plaza, a complex of hotels, stores and restaurants, in Osaka.
This will be followed by freestanding stores in the New Otani Tokyo and the Hilton Osaka in August. Three additional freestanding shops are scheduled to open in August: one more in Tokyo and two in Osaka. The Joan and David collection will be available only through totally controlled Joan and David freestanding boutiques and full collection shop-in-shops.
