NEW YORK — The Immigration and Naturalization Service apprehended 89 illegal aliens at a Brooklyn apparel manufacturer last week.
An INS spokesman said the operation represented the largest number of undocumented immigrants found at one shop since the district office here began a special work-site enforcement project in the garment industry in October 1995.
Acting on information that a large number of illegal workers were employed at Brenda Fashion Inc., 14b 53rd Street, 29 INS special agents gained access to the premises Nov. 12 and interviewed the employees to determine their status. Those found to be in the country illegally were removed from the factory and placed in deportation proceedings.
As a result of the action, Brenda Fashion could be subject to civil penalties and fines ranging from $250 to $2,000 for each unauthorized worker.
