Kmart Corp. said it is paying rent on 238 empty stores, not some 400 — a number erroneously provided by the company that was the basis of a story on page 2, Jan. 23. Kmart also said its rental payments on the shuttered properties were roughly $55 million a year. The Jan. 23 story estimated annual rent payments based on the higher store count.
A Kmart spokeswoman said the discounter is no longer using auctions to dispose of the sites. Future dispositions, she said, would be made through negotiated sales.
