DALLAS — A year of festivities by the Chanel boutique here got started last month at a luncheon and fashion show fund-raiser for Family Gateway, a charity that helps unemployed parents find jobs.
“It’s Family Gateway’s 10th anniversary and our 10-year anniversary, so it just kind of melded,” said Laura McClung, manager of the boutique. “This is a kickoff to a very busy year for us.”
Word has it that the boutique is marking its anniversary here with a series of events that will culminate with a September runway show of Chanel’s fall collection featuring top models, but details haven’t been revealed yet.
The store has been achieving healthy sales gains, with a double-digit increase for the holiday season and a solid single-digit for 1995.
“We do a very good suit and separates business,” McClung noted. “Dallas is in many cases a jacket-driven city because jackets function for everything — for the office and over jeans.”
And remember those Gap-like khaki pants that Chanel showed for spring? McClung already has a waiting list for those $795 pants, and they haven’t even been delivered yet. “Those khakis are so oversold on our order book it’s unbelievable,” she said.
The first event drew almost 400 women — most wearing Chanel suits — to the Adolphus Hotel. It was expected to raise $33,000 for the charity.
“I flew in just for this,” said Cheryl Becker, who lives in Jackson, Miss., and is a faithful Chanel customer. “My husband says I should go to a spa, so I said, ‘There’s something coming up I’d like to go to.”‘
Speaking from the podium, McClung suggested the women remember one of her favorite quotes from Coco Chanel: “You can be ravishing at 20, charming at 40 and irresistible for the rest of your life.”
