NEW YORK — The Amalgamated Bank of New York is offering low-interest loans to unionized federal workers who have been furloughed during the government’s budget crisis.
Loans of up to $2,500 are available to American Federation of Government Employees members at a 5 percent interest rate with a one-year repayment schedule. The offer will expire 30 days after the federal government office shutdown ends.
The bank was founded by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in 1923 and is the only fully owned union bank in the U.S.
