Sao Schlumberger turned heads last week when she made her entrance at the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris for a salute to Jerome Robbins. It wasn’t just that she was on the arm of Japanese billionaire Yoichi Yogi Nishikawa — who bankrolled the gala — but that they were dressed alike. The pair were wearing matching sequined tiger prints.
“Yoichi was born in the Year of the Tiger and is crazy about the motif,” explained Sandrine Pozzo di Borgo, one of the party organizers. “He asked Christian Lacroix to make Sao’s outfit with that in mind.”
Socialite Sally Chiari-Gaggia swished through the corridors in her John Galliano-designed Givenchy dress and matching parachute-sized striped taffeta shawl, while other guests like Bernadette Chirac, Astrid Kohl and Caroline of Monaco mingled.
After the performance, which included song and dance, all 700 guests stood up and sang “Happy Birthday” to Hugues Gall, director of the Paris opera.
“He mentioned it two months ago,” said Pia Pearson, “and we didn’t forget.”
