AND NOW, NEW YORK
Norma Kamali: She should be called Nineties Norma. To get the word out on new deliveries, Kamali has signed onto the Internet. Still, cyberspace doesn’t let clients, press and buyers get up close and personal with her clothes, so the designer held her usual open house to showcase her fall collection.
The line combines fun with function. There were toasty shearling coats, quilted jumpsuits — complete with warm packs for cold weather — and Seventies-inspired corduroy pantsuits. But the designer feels strongest about color, showing grape, kiwi, cranberry and copper for long, slinky velvet dresses, metallic side-zip jackets and lots of mongolian lamb pieces. And just to drive the color point home, Kamali has dictated that no employee of hers will wear black after July.
