JUSTICE DEPT. TAKING CLOSER LOOK AT L’OREAL-MAYBELLINE MERGER
WASHINGTON — L’Oreal’s pending acquisition of Maybelline Inc. has come under greater federal scrutiny. The two companies acknowledged Tuesday that regulators are raising questions about the deal’s potential impact on competitiveness in the mass cosmetics market.
L’Oreal and Maybelline said they had received a request from the Justice Department for more information about the merger.
Company executives downplayed the significance of the request.
“A second request for information is not unusual in a transaction of this size involving participants in the same industry,” said Gary Wilkerson, senior vice president and general counsel for Maybelline. “While there necessarily can be no assurance as to the outcome of the government’s investigation, we are still targeting a closing during the first quarter of 1996.”
