FILING FOR DOLLARS

NEW YORK — It was one of the busiest years ever for bankruptcy lawyers. Confounded by consolidations, too much debt — both company and consumer — and sagging retail sales, dozens of retailers and manufacturers sought protection of the courts, closing hundreds of stores and eliminating thousands of jobs.
