24 CONFIRMED INJURED AT MALDEN FIRE
LAWRENCE, Mass. — Malden Mills Industries said Wednesday that it has been able to confirm that a total of 24 people were injured in the fire that heavily damaged its manufacturing site here on Monday night.
Thirteen of the 24, Malden said, have been treated and released from area hospitals. The conditions of the other 11 range from serious to seriously critical. Although the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it appears that the sprinkler system designed to control the fire had been damaged almost immediately by the explosion of a nearby boiler.
The company also noted that it expects to have restored enough function within 30 days to be able to fulfill between 80 and 90 percent of existing orders for its Polartec and Polarfleece apparel fabrics.
Within 60 to 90 days, it expects to have restored nearly 100 percent of its manufacturing capacity for these products.
