PORTLAND — Stores here reopened on Wednesday morning after the worst storm in a decade battered Oregon and other parts of the Northwest on Tuesday, forcing many retailers to close early.
Six Nordstrom’s units in the Portland region and three Meier & Frank stores in the area, which had closed Tuesday, were open. A Saks Fifth Avenue unit in downtown Portland also closed Tuesday afternoon, but was open Wednesday morning.
The storm hit the Oregon coast with winds up to 119 m.p.h. and battered Portland with gusts of up to 61 m.p.h. Two persons were killed in other parts of the state and more than 200,000 people were without power.
None of the major retailers reported storm damage. Patty Brandt, sales and promotion manager for Nordstrom’s in Portland, said the retailer will open its stores at 7:30. a.m. Saturday, one hour earlier than planned, in an effort to lure shoppers turned away on Tuesday afternoon. — Fairchild News Service
