JOHN S. BURKE JR.
NEW YORK — Services for John S. Burke Jr., a former chief executive officer of B. Altman & Co., will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Watch Hill Chapel, Watch Hill, R.I.
Burke, 72, died Wednesday at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, R.I., near his Watch Hill home. The cause of death was cancer, said son-in-law John W. Townsend. Burke became president of Altman’s in 1954 and succeeded his father as ceo after his father’s death in 1962. Named chairman in 1969, he held that post until his retirement in 1986. The following year, Altman’s was acquired by the Hooker Corp. of Australia, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 1989. In January 1990, the chain was closed.
Burke became a trustee of the Altman Foundation, which owned Altman’s, in 1948.
Survivors include four daughters, Kate B. Townsend, Anne B. Rathbun, Mary Stan Burke and Margo Burke, and a son, John Stephen Burke 3rd.
