“I’ve never done L.A. so fast in my life!” gasped Donna Karan during a five-day Western whirlwind. While most of the heavyweight European designers flocked to New York this week for the VH1 Fashion and Music Awards and the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute ball, Karan and Todd Oldham went Hollywood for Divine Design.
The two New York designers were honored as part of L.A.’s fourth annual AIDS fund-raiser, which benefits Project Angel Food and DIFFA/Los Angeles — Donna for her “corporate humanitarianism,” and Todd for “design talent.” It was originally a home furnishings auction, but adding a 40,000-square-foot apparel sale area doubled last year’s million-dollar earnings.
Karan got a chance to visit West Coast friends: Vidal Sassoon threw a dinner party for her at his home on Saturday night. During the Divine Design dinner, she sat next to New Age guru Deepak Chopra.
Oldham visited the site of his new Beverly Boulevard store, which will start construction next week. He also met with several Hollywood studio executives about some projects he wouldn’t specify.
“It’s a little early to talk about it,” he said, “but I have a great interest in Hollywood.”
