When Giorgio Armani was in New York for a private visit last week, he covered a lot of ground. On Thursday, the designer took in a somewhat special performance of Sunset Boulevard: The show’s star, Betty Buckley had been planning to take the night off because she wasn’t feeling well, but decided to perform anyway when she heard Armani was coming. Buckley welcomed him backstage after the show. Earlier in the day, Armani shopped with the masses at Old Navy on Sixth Avenue. And Friday he lunched with John F. Kennedy Jr. and Kennedy’s aunt, Lee Radziwill, at the Union Square Cafe.
Ralph Lauren got his fair share of the Royal Family during his visit to London late last week for the Winter Party at the Royal Academy, sponsored by Polo. At the party he met Viscount Linley, son of Princess Margaret, his wife, Serena, and Lady Helen Windsor, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and her husband, Tim Taylor. The big day was Saturday, when Princess Diana met him for afternoon tea at the Connaught. The Princess — a big fan of Lauren’s clothes — was renewing an acquaintance that began when she appeared at the CFDA awards. Lauren had promised he’d call her the next time he was in London, and he did.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman leapt up from their table at Cafe Luxembourg, where they were having dinner with friends the other night, when Arthur Miller and a large party arrived. Cruise, wearing a brown velvet suit, and Kidman made a beeline for the playwright’s table. Also in the house: Lorne Michaels in a corner banquette.
