Department stores: Includes the large multiple category specialty stores, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, as well as retailers carrying comprehensive assortments of apparel and home goods, such as Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Dillard’s and May Co.

Specialty stores: A store that carries only product category, ranging from very focused retailers such as Victoria’s Secret in intimate apparel to more broadly based apparel generalists such as The Gap.

National chains: In this presentation, Penney’s and Sears are broken out separately, when significant.

Discount stores: Stores carrying a wide selection of discounted merchandise, such as Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target.

Mail order retailers: Retailers selling primarily through catalogs, such as Spiegel and Lands’ End.
