BURBERRYS: IN SHAPE FOR FALL
NEW YORK — “Everything classic is chic again,” insists Burberrys’ new sportswear design director and consultant, Mary Ann Restivo. The designer’s elegant and fresh play on the classics is a perfect match for this traditional English company. “Burberrys is a name associated with quality and sophistication. I want to bring it into the Nineties without being predictable,” she says.
Her 90-piece fall collection did just that. There were shaped jackets for New Length tweed skirts; lots of easy-mix sportswear including jumpers; pale silk and cotton shirts; jodphurs and bias-cut skirts and vests with matching jackets and safari shirts. Restivo also feels strongly about taking Burberrys out at night, with silk satin tuxedos, black cocktail suits and sleek dresses.
