NEW YORK — Carolina Herrera’s early fall collection is about “dressing and dressing well.” There’s nothing retro here, says the designer, who loves seductive, close-to-the-body shapes in lightweight fabrics; longer skirts and strong-shouldered jackets that flatter the waist. There’s color, too, and lots of it — red, yellow, green, rust, brown and even purple. For evening, Herrera goes all-out glamorous with floor-sweeping satin or chiffon dresses that feature sexy lace details.
Oscar de la Renta is also fond of body-hugging looks for his early fall collection. “Every dress and every suit should fit [a woman] like a glove fits a hand,” says the designer, who is cutting most of his suits and dresses in wool this season. His favorite? Wool jersey. “It’s a wonderful fabric; I love the way it looks for fall.”
