KMART ADDS LARGE SIZES TO JACLYN SMITH LINE
NEW YORK — Seeking to build on its Jaclyn Smith label, Kmart Corp. has begun rolling out the celebrity line in large-size spring sportswear.
The collection, called Jaclyn Smith Woman, features a range of mix-and-match merchandise, including plaid cotton blazers at $26.99; shorts, $18.99; floral print and solid cotton/polyester knit tops, $17.99, and knit pants, $19.99.
The large-size looks, expected to be carried in all of Kmart’s 2,400 discount stores, virtually mirror Smith’s regular-size sportswear merchandise in terms of styling and embellishments. Sizes range from 18W to 24W.
More than 30 million women have purchased something from the original Smith sportswear line since its debut in 1985, according to Kmart.
Karen Daly, fashion buyer for Smith’s collections, said the discounter has “high hopes” for Jaclyn Smith Woman, but she declined to estimate its sales potential. Volume on Jaclyn Smith is reportedly around $150 million.
Daly said the plus-size line in resort styles was tested before Christmas at about 100 Kmart stores in Arizona and Florida, where it was marketed to vacationers. She said it sold “very well.”
For summer, Kmart will roll out a second line of plus-size sportswear around Mother’s Day (May 14) with more pieces, including cotton knit tops and shorts, and rayon-polyester blend shorts.
