NEW YORK — Citing the rising cost of raw materials, the fibers division of Wellman Inc. said Tuesday it is increasing the price of its Fortrel polyester filament by 8 percent, effective Feb. 27.
Wellman’s price hike marks the second time in as many days that a major polyester producer has raised fiber prices.
The increase in Fortrel filament, made at the firm’s Fayetteville, N.C., plant, will involve fiber for apparel, home furnishings and industrial applications.
The Fortrel filament increase is Wellman’s second in six months. On Aug. 2, Wellman said it was increasing the price of its polyester filament by 8 to 10 percent, effective Sept. 4.
On Monday, DuPont said it was raising the price of its Dacron polyester filament by 5 to 8 percent, also effective Feb. 27. It was also DuPont’s second hike in the price of polyester filament within six months.
