7TH ON SALE GETS UNDER WAY IN NEW YORK CITY MAY 17
NEW YORK — The Council of Fashion Designers of America has scheduled its third 7th on Sale benefit, a four-day event starting May 17.
This marks the return of the sale to New York. Its last edition was in San Francisco in 1992.
The event, basically a huge sample sale, which will again be held at the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue and East 26th Street, will benefit the CFDA Vogue Initiative New York City AIDS Fund, and the National AIDS Fund. Both non-profit organizations raise money for AIDS-related causes.
The event is being underwritten by Vogue magazine, which will spend in excess of $500,000, said sources.
It will begin with a gala dinner at the armory, which will be co-chaired by Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
There will be 13 two-and-a-half-hour selling periods, with a different corporate underwriter for each one. The CFDA said it is currently looking for more sponsors for those periods, which will cost $75,000 each.
The first 7th on Sale event, held here in November 1990, raised $4.2 million, while the second, two years later in San Francisco, raised $2.6 million.
